1 Scope
This Part of BS AU 209 specifies requirements for the security marking of the glazing fitted to passenger cars and car derived vehicles.
BS AU 209-3 does not apply to the markings identifying the glazing manufacturer or indicating compliance with national or international requirements for safety glazing materials.
2 Definitions
For the purposes of this Part of BS AU 209 the following definitions apply.
security marking
a mark applied to the glazing in a vehicle using a controlled engraving system which provides a means of identifying that vehicle and which cannot be easily removed by grinding or polishing

a system of marking into the glass surface using either a physical or chemical method

daylight opening
that part of the glazed area in a vehicle which is not obscured by the vehicle bodywork, trim or printed obscuration band when the glazing is in the closed position
3 Security marking
3.1 Security mark
Each piece of external safety glazing material shall be marked with a security mark which shall be either:
a) the vehicle registration number; or b) some other unique number.
NOTE 1 The preferred mark is the vehicle registration number. NOTE 2 Marking of glazed sunroofs, mirrors and headlamps is optional.
3.2 Size of marking
Characters used for marking shall be 7.5 ± 2.5 mm in height.
3.3 Legibility
Marking shall he legible from outside the vehicle at a distance of 1 m under normal daylight viewing conditions.
3.4 Depth of marking
3.4.1 Where the marking is physically engraved into the outer or inner glazing surface the depth of marking shall be:
0.01 mm minimum
0.08 mm maximum.
3.4.2 The depth of marking shall be measured using a gauge with a stylus which has a tip radius not exceeding 0.25 mm.
3.4.3 Where chemical etching is used, the depth of marking shall be either:
a) as specified in 3.4.1; or
b) less than 0.01 mm provided it is engraved into the inside of the glazing.
3.5 Position of marking
3.5.1 For systems complying with 3.4.1, the marking on opening glazing shall be positioned within 30 mm of the bottom of the daylight opening and be legible from outside the vehicle. On fixed glazing, the marking shall be positioned within 30 mm of the bottom or top of the daylight opening.
3.5.2 For systems complying with 3.4.3, the marks shall be positioned within an area which is 30 mm from the lower edge of the daylight opening and 70 mm from its adjoining side, and shall be legible in accordance with 3.3.
