SAE J58:2015 download free.( R ) Flanged 12-Point Screws.
Change In 3.1 regarding dimensions plying to unpiated and uncoated product made (or darity.
Combined and modified Section 3.3.3 and Section 3.3.4, to incorporate two-ring gage acceptability for screw heads, simdar to metric 12 Point Flange Screw Standards ktochtled Figure 1 and Table I accordingly. Added Table 1A.
Added secticn 3-3.5 as specification lacked requirements for heed poeition.
Section 3.4. Figure 1. and Table 1: changed method of dimensioning fillet for ease of interpretation. The values for B were calculated from the previous dimensioning method (E min.VM mm, etc,) so that the part requirements have not physically changed. Only the dimensioning method has changed. Language in section 3.4 made similar to ASME B18.2.7.IM (hex flange screws) for fillet form.
Section 3.42”’ paragraph modified as SAE j58 does not cover reduced body diameters.
Revised 3.7 to darify thread dimensional requirements and indude constant pitch thread series as a psdiaser option. Also made 2A the default uncoatectkmplated thread class If not otherwise speofed.
Modified section 3.11 to better title the gage method as straightness inspection only Eliminated Appendix A in favor of straightness gaging per ASME B 18.2.9. which bader reflects industry practice. Straightness tolerances were listed per previous Appendix A requirements and added graduated requirements for longer screws.
Changes to 3.12 made to reference other industry standards for additional material options. Added cautionary statement regarding hydrogen embrittiement and specifications exceedIng HRC 39 hardness.
Added discontinuity and decarbunzetion requirements to section 3.14 to better define workmanship.
1, SCOPE
Included in SAE j58 are the detailed general and dimensional specifications applicable to flanged 12-point screws recognized as SAE Standard and intended for general use in automotive and other ground-based vehides and industrial equipment.
The inctision of dimensional data in this standard te not intended to imply that all of the products described are stock production sizes. Consumers should consult manufacturers concerning availability of product.

3.2 Options
Options. where specified, shal be at the discretion o( the manufacturer uriess otherwise agreed by manufacturer and purchaser.
3.3 Heads
3.3.1 Head Hei(
The head height shad be meased, parallel the axis of screw, from the lop of the head to the beanng surface of ttie flange
3.3.2 Top of Head
Thetopotheadmaybetforrnorindentedattheopbono1themanutacturer. If?ulltonn.thetopotheadshallbe chamfered or rounded with the diameter of chamfer circle or stall of rounding being equal to the specified maximum width across flats within a tolerance of -15%. If the top of head is lidented, the periphery may be rounded.
3.3.3 Corner Fill and Wrenching Height
Head acceptability shall be determined usrng the two nngs as described In Table 1A, Ring B shaH be placed on the screw heactfoliowedbyRngT. ThewenchlnghelitteacceptabteWringTdoesnotcontactringBafterbothringsareinpIace on the head, The rings shal be machined and ground to avoid any beak edge on the ID.
3.3.4 Bearing Surface
The outer penpbery may be rounded or d bred to the extent permitted by X. as measured on the bearing face. The plane of the bearing face shall be perpendic*.dar to the ax of screw within the runout limit specified in Table 1 Measuremenl of rurlout shall be made as close to the periphery of bearmg face as possible while the screw is held in a colet or other gripping device at a distance equal to one screw diameter from the underside of the head
33.5 Head True Position
The axis of the head shall be located at true position with respect to the axis of the body (deternimed over a distance under the head equal to one diameter) within a tolerance zone whose diameter is equivalent to 8 percent of the maxmium width across flats, regardless of feature size.
3.4 Underhead Fillets
Far all lengths of screws, the fillet shall be a smooth and continuous airve fasing smoothly into the underhead bearing surface and the shank within the linus specified in Table I
For screws threaded lull length, the minamL%n fillet transition diameter. E. mwi. may be reduced by an amount equivalent to the difference between the basic screw diameter and the specified mitmum pitdl diameter of the thread.
3.5 Length
3.5.1 Measurement
The length of screw shell be measured, parallel to the axis of screw, from the beaflng surface of the head to the extreme end of the shank
3.5.2 Tolerance on Length
The tolerance on length shell be as tabulated ii Table 2.
3.6 Body Diameter
On screws threaded full length, the diameter of the screw under the head shall not be less than the specified minimum pitch diameter of the thread.
3.7 Threads
Threads shall preferably be produced by rolling and shall meet the requements of ASME 81.1.
Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser
• Thread form shall be UNR
• Thread series shall be UNRC, UNRF, or one of the constant pitch senes as speafied by the purdiaser.
• Thread class shall be 2A for uncoated arid unplated threads. In accordance with ASME B1.1. coated or plated threads shall be accepted using the class 3A high unit dimensions (3A GO) and the class 2A low limit dimensions
(2A NOGO).
