BS 6087:1981 pdf free download.Flexible joints for cast iron drainpipes and fittings (BS 437) and for cast iron soil, waste and ventilating pipes and fittings (BS 416).
1 .Scope
BS 6087 specifies design requirements and type tests for flexible joints for cast iron pipes and fittings complying with the requirements of BS 437 and BS 416. Marking of as8emblies is also specified.
2. References
The titles of the standards publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside Ljck cover.
3. Definition
For the purposes of BS 6087 the following definition applies.
joint assembly. Two spigots or a socket and spigot and means of jointing them together1 assembled Into a single unit.
4. DesIgn
4.1 General. Flexible joints shall be so designed that:
(a) when formed into a joint assembly with straight pipes, orfittings. or fittings and straight pipes, specified in either BS 416 or BS 437, the assembly shall comply with the performance requirements specified in clause 6 of this standard, and
(b) when formed into a joint assembly with fittings specified in BS 416 or BS 437, the assembly, when fitted, shalt be wholly within the straight portions of the fittings.
4.2 Locating register for couplings. Type R couplIn shall incorporate an integral circumferentially continuous locating register. The bore of the register shall be smaller – than the minimum external pipe diameter by at least 50 % of the minimum wall thickness and greater than the maximum internal pipe diameter.
Type NR couplings shall not incorporate any register.’
5. Materials
5.1 Elastomeric joint rings, if used, shall comply with the
requirements of BS 2494 for rings of type 2 (drainage).
5.2 Metallic components shall be of one of the materials
specified in 52.1 to 5.2.3.
5.2.1 Cast/ron. For joints integral with pipes, cast iro complying with the tensile strength requirements of BS 1452, not less than grade 150.
For loose couplings (i.e. not Integral with pipes), cast Iron complying with the tensile strength requirements of 1BS 1452, not less than grade 180.
In either case the cast iron shall be coated in accordance with clause 9 of BS 437: 1978.
5.2.2 Stainless steel. Material for nuts and bolts complying with the requirements of BS 970: Part 1, not less than grade 302S25 or complying with the requirements of BS 31 11,not lessthangrade 304S17. Materialfor coupling bands complying with the requirements of BS 1449:Part2.
5.2.3 Low carbon steel. Low carbon steel shall be galvanized in accordance with BS 729.
6. Test requirements
6.1 General. A joint assembly shall comply with the test requirements in 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4.
6.2 Deflection. A joint assembly shall be capable of being deflected to the angle shown in table 1 by the methods specified in A.2 without leakage.
6.3 Straight draw. A joint assembly shall be capable of being tested by the method specified in A.3 without leakage.
6.4 Shear resistance. A joint assembly shall be capable of being tested by the method specified in A.4 without leakage.
7.Marking
Joints shell be legibly and durably marked with the following:
(a) the number and date of BS 6087.
i.e. BS6087 : 1981;
(b) BS 437 (or letter ‘D’ for drain) and/or BS 416 (or letter ‘S’ for soil) as appropriate;
(c) the trademark or name of the manufacturer; (d) the identification of the factory if the manufacturer has more than one;
(e) in cases where the joints are not supplied by the manufacturer of the pipes and fittings with which they are Intended to be used, or in cases where the manufacturer supplies incompatible systems (see note), the dimensions or other identification of the pipes and fittings with which they are compatible;
NOTE. Different Joints and similar Joints by different manufacturers, while individually complying with BS 6087, may not necessarily be Interchangeable.
(f) in cases where the joints incorporate a locating register, ‘Type R’;
(g) in cases where the joints do not incorporate a locatingregister,`Typev NR’.’
