BS 6087:1990 download free.British Standard Specification for flexible joints for grey or ductile cast iron drainpipes and fittings (BS 437) and for discharge and ventilating pipes and fittings (BS 416).
BS 6087 specifies design requirements and type tests for flexible joints for grey and ductile east iron pipes and fittings complying with the requirements of BS 437 and BS 416. Marking of assemblies is also specified. For the guidance of specifiers and purchasers, options are listed in appendix C.
NOTE. The titles of the pubhc.ations referred to in this standard are listed on the inside back cover.
2 Definitions
For the purposes of BS 6087 the definitions given in BS 4118 apply, together with the following.
2.1 joint assembly. Two spigots or a socket and spigot
and means of jointing them together, assembled into
a single unit.
3 Design
3.1 General
Flexible joints shall be designed so that joint assemblies
comply with BS 6087 when:
(a) formed with pipes, fittings, or pipes and fittings complying with BS 416; or
(b) formed with pipes, fittings or pipes and fittings complying with BS 437; or
(c) formed with pipes or fittings complying with BS 416 connected to pipes or fittings complying with BS 437.
3.2 Locating register for couplings Couplingsgaskets shall incorporate an integral central circumferentially Continuous locating register. In the assembled condition, the central register shall not protrude into the internal bore of the pipe but shall engage with the pipe thickness by a minimum depth of 3 mm.
3.3 Location of joints
Joint assemblies with fittings complying with BS 416 or
BS 437 shall be wholly within the straight portion of the
fittings.
4 Materials
4.1 Elastomeric joint rings, if used, shall comply with the requirements of BS 2494 for rings of type D (drainage).
4.2 MetalPic components shall be of one of the following materials.
(a) Grey iron. For joints integral with pipes, grey iron complying with the tensile strength requirements of BS 1452. not less than grade 150.
For loose couplings. i.e. not integral with pipes, grey iron complying with the tensile strength requirements of BS 1452. not less than grade 180.
In all cases the iron shall be coated in accordance with BS 437 or BS 416.
(b) Ductile iron. For joints integral with pipes, or for loose couplings, ductile iron complying with the tensile strength requirements of BS 4772.
In all cases the iron shall be coated in accordance with BS 437 or BS 416.
(C) Stainless steel. For nuts and bolts, stainless steel complying with the requirements of BS 6105, not less than grade A28O. Steel for coupling bands and earth continuity clips complying with the requirements of BS 1449 : Part 2, not less than grade 304S15.
5 Testing
5.1 General
A joint assembly shall comply with 5.2. 5.3 and 5.4 when subjected to the leakage test given in A.2.
5.2 Straight draw
When tested in accordance with A.3 the joint assembly shall not leak.
5.3 Deflection
When tested in accordance with A.4 and deflected to the angle shown in table 1 the joint assembly shall not leak.
5.4 Shear resistance
The joint assembly shall not leak when tested in accordance with A.5.
5.5 Electrical continuity test
If provision is made for electrical continuity, when tested in accordance with appendix B, the resistance of the electrical coupling shall not exceed 0.5 !2.
6 Marking
Each flexible joint shall be legibly and indelibly marked with the following information.
(a) The number and year of this British Standard, i.e.
BS 6087: 1990.
(b) BS 437 (or letter D’ for drain) and/or BS 416 (or letter ‘S’ for discharge and ventilating pipes) as appropriate to the suitability of the joint.
(c) The manufacturer’s name or identification mark.
(d) The nominal pipe size.
(e) ‘DUCTILE’ or ‘SG’ for products made from ductile (spheroidal graphite) iron.
NOTE. Products made from grey iron would be identified by not being so mirked.
(f) ‘ST’ for products made from stainless steel.
