BS EN 1942:1996 download.Self adhesive tapes Measurement of thickness.
1 Scope
BS EN 1942 specifies a method to measure the total thickness of both the backing and adhesive layer compnsang an adhesive tape.
The thickness is a useful factor in defining an adhesive tape and checking its uniformity. It is used in the determination of physical and electrical properties.
Since tue wi(lIh of adhesive tape shall be greater than the diameter of the pressure foot on the micrometer, and as this can be up to 12 mm, the method is therefore not strictly applicable to adhesive tapes having a width less than the diameter of the foot.
Nevertheless, this method can be applied to adhesive tapes of width less than the diameter of the circular foot on the micrometer. However, in this case, the value obtained can only be approximate.
2 Definition
For the purposes of this standard, the following (lefinitlon applies:
thickness of adhesive tape
The vertical distance between the two surfaces of an adhesive tape.
3 Principle
The adhesive tape is placed between the pressure foot and platforni of a micrometer.
4 Materials
Appropriate cleaning solvent.
5 Apparatus
Micrometer with a flat circular pressure foot of diameter between 8 mm and 12 nun, and a platfonu consi(lerabty larger than the foot. The pressure exerted by the foot on to the platlonn shall range from 50 kPa to 70 kPa.
The micrometer used shall be sensitive to 2 p.m and have a graduation adapted to this sensitivity.
6 Test sample and test pieces
Discard the 3 outer turns of adhesive tape from the roll before taking test pieces.
Perforni the test on 5 test pieces from each roll. Each test piece shall be 50 mm long and the same width as the adhesive (ape.
This width shall be greater than the diameter of the foot, of the micrometer.
The test pieces shall be free from surface irregularities or creases other than the normal surface features of the type of adhesive tape under test
7 Procedure
Place the test piece between the pressure foot and the platfonii of the micrometer, with the adhesive side facing downward and in contact with the platform. Take care not to entrap air bubbles. Lower the foot gently on to the surface of the adhesive tape and take the reading on the dial or vernier within two seconds. Make measurements at two points on each of the five test pieces taken from the roll.
Between each test, carefully clean the pressure foot using a suitable solvent, then reset. the apparatus and check the zero before each operation.
8 Expression of results
Take as the thickness the arithmetic mean (average) of the ten measurements made. Express this in niicrornetres to the nearest micrometre.
9 Test report
The test report shall inritide the following information:
a) a reference to this European Standard;
b) all information necessary to identit’ the test sample;
c) the (late of the test
d) the results obtained;
e) any operation not specified in this European Standard which can influence the results.
